What is Clean Energy? What is Green Energy?
Are they the same thing? Green energy is defined as power generated from natural sources, such as wind, water, and sunlight. Clean energy is defined as energy that does not pollute the atmosphere when used. Put simply, there is a crossover between clean energy and green energy, and they are typically used as direct synonyms. Clean and green energy do their best to create energy and electricity for you while cutting out the use of natural gases wherever possible. Instead of gases, clean energy uses renewable resources that will not deplete with time or usage. Solar energy, the energy generated by windmills, hydro-powered technology, and geothermal energy are some of the numerous resources that power clean energy.
Why Switch to Clean Energy?
You have probably heard the terms “Global Warming,” “Greenhouse Gases” and “Carbon Footprint,” but many people don’t fully understand what any of those terms mean.
Global warming is the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system.
Greenhouse gases are gases that absorb and emit radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. They are causing the greenhouse effect on our planet. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.
Electricity generation and transportation-related activities account for well over half of the 14 percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions in the United States from 1990 to 2008. (This pollution is another reason why green energy is so important–it doesn’t add to this statistic.)
A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc.
Why is it important to know what those terms mean?
Each of those terms is used during discussions about the health of our environment and helps us understand our impact on it. The concern about pollution in the air caused by using coal and gas to produce energy is a very real concern. The physical and financial costs incurred from the pollution are remarkable. A recent report released by Harvard University estimates that the public health effects of coal are worth nearly $75 billion per year. The smog and pollution they create are dangerous catalysts for many negative physical effects such as breathing problems, cancer, lung sickness, and so much more.
The beauty of green energy sources is their many benefits. They positively impact you, everybody else, and the earth as a whole. Renewable, green energy generates a vastly lower amount of air pollutants and promotes a cleaner atmosphere. Clean energy is better for the environment and better for your health and ends up costing a lot less in the end.
Fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, also have a major negative impact on natural water resources, often polluting water through coal mining or natural gas drilling. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar energy, by contrast, require virtually no water to operate and thus do not pollute water or spoil the natural water sources.
Renewable energy is not only a benefit to the earth and to public health but also to your finances. The fact that renewable energy sources cannot be exhausted means that the electricity prices for you and your family can actually be inexpensive, and may even be decreased in the near future.
Did You Know?
Pennsylvania is among the top ten consumers of coal, natural gas, petroleum products, and electricity. It is the second-largest net supplier of energy to other states, after Wyoming. Plus, Pennsylvania is the third-highest electricity-generating state in the nation, behind only Texas and Florida. Our Electricity generation regularly exceeds our power consumption, and our state sends more electricity outside its borders than any other state.* So, being able to continue to supply clean energy can be a strong boost for Pittsburgh and its surrounding cities.
In 2018, almost 5% of the state’s electricity was generated from renewable energy sources. Wind energy has now become Pennsylvania’s largest renewable source for electricity generation since 2013 and provided about 36% of the state’s renewable electricity in 2018.
At the end of the day, it just makes sense to make the transition to clean energy. By doing so, you are not only saving the earth and preserving the health of your friends, family and everyone else but also setting yourself up for cheap electricity in the future.
